The Western Corporate Press: Any Way the Wind Blows
While Cubans express their delight over the visible recuperation of the health of President Fidel Castro, the western press, some of which have morbidly speculated on the patient's convalescence, have been obliged to report the Cuban's leader's meeting in Havana with his Venezuelan counterpart, Hugo Chavez.
Now, six months after that dramatic day when Fidel Castro's personal secretary, Carlos Valenciaga, announced that the Cuban leader had been taken ill, a video is being shown around the world in which Fidel is seen in good humor, standing up conversing and drinking juice with President Chavez.
Cubans and many friends of their Revolution, as well as millions of people of good faith around the world, had been hoping for such news, since they have been concerned over the Cuban leader's health.
Cubans from all walks of life; in the streets, in rural communities, schools and factories, expressed their enthusiasm at news of their leader's recovery. The majority of Cuban people were confident that Fidel would recuperate, though they had been informed, by President Castro himself, that the convalescence would be a long one.
In effect, Fidel Castro warned various times in sporadic messages sent to his fellow citizens that the exact evolution of his intestinal illness could not be made public, because it could be used against the island by the United States.
And, for those who have suffered the effects of Washington's blockade against Cuba, that explanations makes perfect sense, though the people naturally would like to know how Fidel is doing.
Nonetheless, Cubans went on with their normal lives, working or studying, just as President Castro had urged them to do. But those abroad responded differently.
Reports came out containing all sorts of fatalistic diagnosis, many attributed to supposed specialists. There were dire speculations in the yellow press and lots of just plain gossip.
The western corporate press has never been known for its objectively, trustworthy sources or respect for the privacy of public personalities, and this has been confirmed once again by their dismal performance regarding the state of Fidel Castro's health.
