The premier of a film dedicated to the youngest daughter of one of the Cuban Five was attended by Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon
“Ivette,” the first of a series of ten documentaries to be produced by the Cuban Film Institute about the Cuban Five, was premiered at the Jose Marti Memorial in Havana’s Revolution Square. In attendance was Ricardo Alarcon, president of the National Assembly, who described the film as representing love –in the fullest sense of the word– and praised it for its find blending of artistic work with real life.
Directed by Lourdes de los Santos, the nine-minute short is dedicated to the youngest daughter of Rene Gonzalez, a seven year-old girl who has never seen her imprisoned father but who uses drawing as a way of bringing him into her world of fantasy.
The documentary, with veteran photographer Ivan Naples behind the camera, collects scenes of the young girl at school, at play and drawing next to her mother, Olga Salanueva.
The music was provided by leading Cuban singer and songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. It features a rendering by Silvio of John Lennon’s Imagine, with takes of the Havana park where a statue of the former Beatles exist and the girl using the lyrics of Imagine as motif for her drawings.
Prior to the film’s showing, Olga Salanueva read one of her husband’s letters in which he envisioned what a documentary dedicated to his daughter should be like, suggesting that it should be one in which children in general be at the center.
Alarcon stressed the valiant stance taken by Rene and his four comrades, who are in prison for their fighting against anti-Cuba terrorism in the United States and who, from their prison cells in the US, continue to wage battle.
