Cuban Youth Issue Declaration of Principles

* The document was read during the vigil and cultural gala on the eve of the 154th anniversary of Cuba’s national hero Jose Marti, at his birthplace on Paula Street in Havana.

We have reached the first minute of the birthday of Jose Marti, national hero, apostle of our independence and maestro of all Cubans. In the daybreak of his 154th birthday, and gazing at the dawn of a new and definite beginning for the peoples of our Americas, the next generation of Cubans publicly professes faith in the ideas that Marti nurtured in his heart, ideas he enlightened with his words, honoured with his life and impregnated with his blood in the battlefields for a free Cuba.

Since [his death on] May 19, 1895 the most outstanding children of this country have been educated in his example; they have grown up honouring his image and have fought to the death defending his doctrines. Today the love and respect towards his memory multiply in a youth that is better prepared, more well-educated, and more aware of the deeply humanist legacy they inherited from him. The revolution resumed in the year of his hundredth birthday, led by Fidel, Raul and a group of heroic youths inspired by his ideas, and who made his dreams come true. That encourages us to move forward every day and helps us resist aggression, the blockade and threats that are constantly coming from the government of that “brutal and rough North that despises us.”

But no obstacle, no matter how powerful, could keep this Revolution from its victorious and irreversible march towards the destiny foreseen by Marti and chartered by Fidel. Along that path we will be joined at every step by all those men and women who for two centuries have been forging the unshakable structure of the Cuban nation, because, as Raul taught us, “the glories of the homeland are not to be dusted off the day of their celebration. They are to be felt and experienced in the harsh trance and dilemmas of the present, as a light that guides us so we don’t get lost along twisted, barren turns.”

The best tribute Cuban youth can pay to the Apostle is the affirmation of the principles of Marti and Fidel’s revolution which have proven with its actions that “today’s dreams will be tomorrow’s reality,” that “bad people only win where good people are indifferent,” but “there where man perseveres, the sun will always shine,” as proven by the dignity and the honour shown by five young Cuban men who have not given up despite the cruel and brutal treatment they have been subjected to in the prisons of the United States, kidnapped by the government of that country for the sole crime of fighting against terrorism. They represent the purest of youth formed by the Revolution, and they are the greatest example of human improvement and the meaning of virtue.

Jose Marti, from this humble house where you were born, with all of that love and hope inside you, Cuban youth pledge to continue working modestly and tirelessly to make our nation better every day; and that if danger ever threatens the dignity and decorum of your people, the cry of warning and combat that you taught us will again be heard, that cry which Fidel vindicated with the attack on Moncada and Raul affirmed on December 2, 2006 at the Revolution Square that treasures your sacred memory:
