Nairobi, Jan 24 (RHC-Granma)- "The Cuban revolution has been and will be a fortress of socialism in Latin America and of resistance to imperialism," said Cuban legislator and economist Osvaldo Martinez, on Tuesday at the Seventh World Social Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.

Martinez, chair of the Cuban parliament's Economic Affairs Committee, participated in a panel on critical thinking and social struggle in Latin America that included well-known intellectuals and professors.

Before a diverse audience, the legislator stressed that the continuity of the revolution is guaranteed.

"The supreme guarantees of this continuity are the ethical values implanted by the revolution, which comprise a political culture opposed to consumerism, banality and profit as a way of life," commented Martinez.

The Cuban legislator also noted the positive tendency in the growth of the Cuban economy over the last three years including a 12.5 GDP increase in 2006.

Martinez said that prospects are promising as the relations of exchange and collaboration increase under the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), signed by Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia and most recently Nicaragua.

The panel in which Martinez spoke was organized by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) together with Inmanuel Wallestein, from the United States; Boaventura de Sousa (Portugal); Francois Houtart (Belgium); and Camille Chalmers (Haiti).

Brazilian Joao Paulo Santos of the Movimiento Sin Tierra (Landless Movement) and Colombian academic Liliam Soriano also spoke at the session.
