On February 6, 1932, at seven in the morning, Emilia Gorriaran gave birth to a smiling boy who quickly made his mark on history and whose early departure at just 27-years-old will forever be mourned by the Cuban people.

Camilo Cienfuegos’ early life was characterized by humbleness, economic difficulties and the well-aimed guidance of his parents. As a young boy he was active in raising funds for orphaned children and dreamed of being a sculptor, but would go on to use his hands and sheer dedication to sculpt a titanic work of another sort.

He was forced out of Cuba to the United States on several occasions. His definitive return in 1956 along with an expeditionary force of 81 revolutionaries aboard the Granma yacht would fulfill his dream “To go to Cuba and be in the frontline of the battle” to liberate the country.

In rugged, broken terrain and on the plains, Camilo became a mythical figure with whom the people identified for his modesty, good nature and his wide brim hat. He also became the hero of several victories and a proven commander alongside his leader Fidel Castro.

Before disappearing into the sea, he lived “a thousand anecdotes.” For many who have only read or heard of him, he is remembered each year at the many schools bearing his name and by the population as a whole.

As Fidel Castro once said, “Camilo will continue to live in men like him and in men who are inspired by him.”
